Not well-known by the people, the Course Camarguaise (“Camarguese race”) is a bull sport in which the beast is not killed or even subjected. It is the core of major local fairs in early Summer. The bulls are first brought to the arena (the abrivado), and put into the “toril” (a house with a door leading directly to the sand), then the show can go on as the trumpets play traditional tunes by Bizet. With the bulls, the main actors of the show are the so-called “raseteurs”, men in whites clothes running in the arena. Their duty is earn rewards by grabbing pieces of tissue or little rope tied to the horns of the beast. To do so, they must run very close to the beast. It is a dangerous sport indeed, and it requires a serious training, a perfect physical shape and a licence from the French federation of Camarguese race (FFCC), that guarantees for them to be officially considered as high-level sportsmen. Lighter and faster than corrida bulls, Camarguese race bull are sometimes as highly considered as local stars, and the most gracious beasts of the “manades” (breeding communities) may wear their symbol, usually sticked onto their back. Avec les taureaux, les acteurs essentiels de la course camarguaise sont les “raseteurs”, habillés tout de blanc, qui tentent, à l'aide d'un crochet, d'attraper différents attributs primés, placés sur la tête du taureau, en passant en courant au ras du taureau (on dit alors qu'il font un raset). C'est un sport dangereux qui demande une formation sérieuse, une condition physique excellente et un titre de licencié auprès de la FFCC (Fédération française de course camarguaise), qui garantit au raseteur un statut officiel de sportif de haut niveau. Plus légers et rapides que les taureaux de corrida, les taureaux de course sont des animaux admirés parfois comme des stars locales, et les plus belles bêtes des différentes manades en portent la devise collée sur le garrot, comme le symbole de leur long travail de sélection. Elles figurent au programme des courses, et chacun est attentif au calendrier des courses camarguaises afin de ne pas rater les plus fiers compétiteurs. |
